IOWA'S STEVE ALFORD EARNS MID-SEASON HONORS
Jan. 3, 2005
University
of Iowa head coach Steve Alford edged out Karl Hobbs (George Washington)
and Bruce Weber (Illinois) to grab the Jim Phelan Coach of the Year
“Mid-Season Honors.”
At 12-1 the Hawkeyes are off to their best start in six years under
Alford, including wins over Louisville, Texas, Texas Tech and Northern
Iowa. Winners of nine straight, Iowa closed out the 2004 calendar year
with a win over Saint Louis.
On Dec. 28 Alford collected win No. 100 at Iowa, with a 73-63 win over Air
Force. On Dec. 3 Alford notched career-win No. 250, with an 88-53 win over
Centenary. His career mark stands at 257-149. Alford is 101-72 at Iowa,
moving into fifth place on the Iowa list for coaching victories. Iowa's
top four coaches in career wins include Tom Davis (269), Lute Olson (168),
Rollie Williams (139) and Bucky O'Connor (114).
Alford received seven first place votes from the 20-member panel, which is
chaired by former Mount St. Mary’s head coach Jim Phelan. Each member of
the panel voted for their top five selections, with the recipient being
determined by a point system. Five points were awarded for a first place
vote, ending with one vote for a fifth place vote.
Southern Illinois’ Bruce Weber (5), George Washington’s Karl Hobbs (4),
Hofstra’s Tom Pecora (2), Creighton’s Dana Altman (1) and Gonzaga’s Mark
Few (1) also received first place votes (in parenthesis).
The mid-season coaching honor is awarded in conjunction with the Jim
Phelan Coach of the Year Award, which is handed out annually by
CollegeInsider.com. This is third season in which a mid-season honor has
been awarded. Last season Creighton’s Dana Altman was recognized and Santa
Clara’s Dick Davey was the recipient in 2003.
The Jim Phelan National Coach of the Year will be announced in March 2005.
Previous recipients include Rob Barnes (Mississippi), Rob Evans
(Mississippi), Bob Huggins (Cincinnati), Greg Kampe (Oakland), Mike
Krzyzewski (Duke), Phil Martelli (St. Joseph’s), Bo Ryan (Wisconsin) and
Mark Slonaker (Mercer).
